15 GRADUATE FROM MINISTRY'S SCREENPLAY COURSE

IT WAS a special day for 15 people, including journalists, scriptwriters and theatre personalities, when they became the first batch of “graduates” of the Masterclass Screenplay course on Thursday.

The course, the first of its kind in Malaysia, was organised by the Arts, Culture and Heritage Ministry and conducted by London-based trainers Garvan Macgarth and Russell Wilks.

Ministry secretary-general Datuk Siti Azizah Abod presented the students with their certificates at a simple graduation ceremony held at Finas Complex in Ulu Klang.

Among the students were award-winning directors, scriptwriters, theatre personalities and aspiring writers including Adman Salleh, Normah Nordin, Fatimah Abu Bakat, Quraishsh Raphy, A. Wahid Nasir, Fauziah Mohd Johar (Zieman), Jayanthi Mahalingam, Mathias Ali, Christina Mario Orow, Amberi Mohd Zin, Hakimi Ismail, Abdul Rahman Yat, C.K. Wing and Mat Piah Teh Deris.

During the six-week course, the students attended lectures, did course work and assignments, closely supervised by their trainers who were actors and scriptwriters in their own right.

In her speech, Siti Azizah said the ministry was already planning to organise similar programmes regularly.

“But first, let’s see what this new batch of scriptwriters can come out with. We hope to see good scripts coming up soon,” she said.
