PETALING JAYA: When Ricky Yam was alive, he played bass guitar for the Country Boys, a small country music band popular in PJ Old Town. After he died on Tuesday, his wife Monique Wong Mui Yoke revealed that her husband had wanted his musician friends to have a jam session at his wake.
Monique has made sure his wish will be fulfilled.
The late country music bassist made this unusual request to his wife several years ago when he attended a funeral of a friend, also a musician.
''He said it was his farewell wish to see all his musician friends jamming at his wake (today),'' said Monique in a phone interview.
Yam succumbed to throat cancer at 52 at University Hospital, leaving his wife and four children. His funeral service will be held tomorrow at St Ignatius Church in Taman Mayang here.
Monique relayed her late husband's wish to his close friend Edwin Nathaniel.
Nathaniel, Yam's long-time buddy of 25 years, is trying to fulfil Yam's wish by organising the jam session today.
He is calling Yam's musician friends to join in the wake at Modern Casket Funeral Parlour in Jalan 229 from 8pm to midnight.
''More than 100 musicians have agreed to come together to pay their last respects for Yam.
''We will play country music and oldies, something that Yam would appreciate,'' said Nathaniel who last saw Yam a few days ago.
Among Yam's friends expected at the jam session today are Mike Croft, Bonnie Theadeus, Freddie Fernandez, Francis Dankar, Gran Pereira (ex-Alleycats keyboardist), Mike of Titanic, members of T-Junction, Charles Nathaniel and Richard Gomez of Delta, Lino of Drifting Cowboys, Charles Barnabas, Errol D'Cruz, Jimmy Loh of Alleycats and the popular trio Kenny, Remy and Martin.
